In 2005 I started working with local computer expert and giclee print meister Mike Hiller of Homer Alaska. He introduced me to the possiblities of turning my art into a product that would allow the average art buyer to own some of my work. Artwork which , until then, had been only available in original form. I have been reluctant in the past to offer print work because it usually meant turning the artwork over to a series of technicians and hoping for the best end result while spending a lot of money. Orders always had to be large in number as it costs less per unit when printing large numbers, traditionally. In addition quality and permanance never satisfied me. That all changed with Gilclee.
Giclee printing is a inkjet type printing but a huge step up from your desktop printer. Epson archival printers were initially developed to proof offset type work but it was soon realized that the proof was outstripping the offset for quality. From there high quality, permanent inks were created and fine acid free art papers were added to the process. This made things very good for the individual artist who could access one of these printers and gain the expertise necessary to use one.
Knowlege of computers and imaging programs like Photoshop are a necessary link to working in this medium and fortunately during my years of designing graphic art I had gained these important skills. So the process starts by scanning a slide or taking a digital picture of one of my originals then uploading to the computer and Photoshop. Now I am able to adjust color, contrast and even paint further on the piece to make it ready for the printer. Mike and I proceed to proof and rework until the best possible result can be obtained. Sometimes the print exceeds the beauty of the original in fact.
As one can see, this allows me to have complete input and control down to the last detail insuring a very fine product which can be repeated as often as possible or in limited numbers at a printing.
